Kavanaugh’s Finances

“Before President Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, he had a lot of debt. In May 2017, he reported owing between $60,004 and $200,000 on three credit cards and a loan against his retirement account. By the time Trump nominated him to the high court in July 2018, those debts had vanished.” MotherJones.com

Kavanaugh Will No Longer Teach at Harvard

There was a letter from 800 alumni demanding that his classes be cancelled. “We believe that Judge Kavanaugh’s appointment as an HLS lecturer sends a message to law students, and in particular female students, that powerful men are above the law,” CNN.com

Gamble vs. US

If Kavanaugh is seated in the Supreme Court, he could have the deciding vote and set the precedent and those pardoned by Trump would not be able to be tried by states afterwards.

“The Supreme Court is considering whether the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits any person from being prosecuted for the same offense more than once, bars a federal prosecution for a criminal offense when the defendant has already been prosecuted for the same offense in state court.” TheUSConstitution.org

Many Sexual Abuse Victims Coming Forward

Now, many sexual abuse survivors are coming forward. People feel that Dr. Ford coming forward means that they should also feel empowered to – not about abuse from Kavanaugh; but from any sexual abuse. “People Share Their Own Stories of Sexual Assault in Solidarity with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.” HarpersBazaar.com

Kavanaugh’s Lies

He lied about the drinking age in Maryland and he was 17 when he was drinking anyway, so he broke the law. “The legal drinking age was raised to 21 in Maryland when Kavanaugh was 17 years old in 1982, which is when Blasey’s alleged assault took place.
Not only is Kavanaugh wrong about the drinking age when he was in high school; he wasn’t even 18 years old (the incorrect drinking age he claims) when he recorded his own beer drinking on his calendar at the time.” HuffPost.com

Because of his lies, he should be thrown off the bench – not merely lose the ability to sit on the Supreme Court. Him getting away with lying makes it okay for everyone to lie under oath.

Opioid Bill

Sens. Murray and Alexander’s opioid bill got through the House. Now it has to go through the Senate. It has bipartisan support.

“As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray worked to secure $3.78 billion dollars to fight opioid epidemic—an increase of $2.7 billion from 2017.
Latest investments enhance State grants, support surveillance and prevention efforts, and improve mental health care for underserved and rural communities

Its Funding

There was $3.3bn allocated for it from the omnibus bill. TheHill.com. This is not enough. The Council of Economic Advisors said that in 2015 it would take $504 billion to fully solve the problem. Their Nov. 2017 report: WhiteHouse.gov. There is $100bn allocated for treatment of those with HIV / AIDS, for context.

FAA Authorization

The Federal Aviation Administration authorization will happen this week.

“The legislation also seeks to improve aviation safety and capacity of the national airspace system, provide a framework for integrating new technology safely into our airspace, provide a stable funding system, and advance the implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).” FAA.gov

Sexual Assault in Flight

Sexual assault on flights is on the rise. Sen. Murray has legislation to stop this. It will be included in the FAA authorization.

“The National In-Flight Sexual Misconduct Task Force will be tasked with issuing recommendations to ensure airlines are properly responding to and addressing in-flight sexual misconduct, including training, reporting, data collection, and law enforcement notification.” Murray.Senate.gov

“Last year the Association of Flight Attendants union surveyed its members on the subject. Among almost 2,000 flight attendants who responded, one out of five said they had dealt with complaints of sexual assault from passengers.
The survey found that law enforcement was contacted or met the plane less than half of the time.” SeattleTimes.com

“FBI data show that the number of cases opened to investigate sexual assault aboard airplanes has increased from about 40 per year nationally in 2014 and 2015 to about 60 per year in 2016 and 2017.” SeattleTimes.com

Migrant Children Being Moved to Tents in Texas

“More than 1,600 migrant children have been sent with little notice on late-night voyages to their new home: a barren tent city in West Texas, where they do not receive schooling and have limited access to legal representation. The Trump administration opened the facility because shelters that house migrant children have been overflowing.” NYTimes.com

Who is in Charge? Where Do They Go?

When families are separated it is managed by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Their program for handing unaccompanied minors: ACF.HHS.gov. FAQs about the treatment of unaccompanied minors: ACF.HHS.gov. They try to find the best place for the children. First, they try to place them with their immediate family in the US. If not, with an extended family or family friend. They sometimes have to pass the children to other organizations for care. More about the problems and solutions: NYTimes.com. Do we really want more federal oversight that could potentially cause more deportations?

ICE Wants to Destroy Records of Sexual Abuse

“A July 14, 2017 notice published by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)—the agency in charge of archiving materials created by the federal government—states that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking permission to destroy ‘records related to detainees, including incidents of sexual abuse and assault, escapes, deaths while in agency custody, telephone rates charged to detainees, alternatives to detention, logs and reports on status of detainees and detention facilities, and location and segregation of detainees.’ ” SplinterNews.com

It is shocking that there is such a lack of oversight in how refugees and immigrants are being treated. We need independent organizations such as the Red Cross or the UN to make sure that people are being treated well.

Number of UACs (Unaccompanied Alien Children) released to sponsors: ACF.HHS.gov

The HHS intentionally separated families: “Newly released memo reveals secretary of homeland security signed off on family separation policy.” OpenTheGovernment.org

Children being taken to detention center in Texas. They are waiting to be sponsored and then taken home. Joe Kennedy posted the list of organizations to go to sponsor a child. Where is it being publicized? Uac is an unaccompanied alien child. Orr has custody then they find immediate family or extended family then friend. Then willing person. What is the process?
This administration is not following these rules. Children are being detained much longer because of zero tolerance and because they are disregarding the Flores agreeement which stops detention over 20 days.

Shackled and Detained Pregnant Immigrant Women

Sen. Murray: “It is absolutely unacceptable that in our country pregnant women are being detained, shackled, and denied the care they need to have a healthy pregnancy.” HELP.Senate.gov

We don’t know if Congress can rein in unilateral sanctions like this. Kate will look into it.

Booker & Warren’s Guaranteed Jobs Bill

The bill proposed by Booker and Warren may only affect manual jobs – caregivers and builders, for instance. Found no source for this.

“The (Democratic party) … is no longer working under the illusion that Republicans would agree to any form of meaningful compromise and has stopped ‘self-censoring themselves before they put forth legislation to be considered.'” CNN.com More information about this: Vox.com
