The Green New Deal

In Washington State, we have a statewide resolution to pressure our representatives to support the Federal Green New Deal resolution. Please cosponsor it and ask other folks / orgs to: Google doc. We delivered it to our senators’ staffers on April 9th, and will to Rep. Kilmer on April 30th.

What Is It?

The Green New Deal is not a bill. It is not legislation. It is a resolution that Federal senators and Representatives can cosponsor in principle. The legislation will be written in detail later. The resolution in the Senate: S.Res 8 and S.Res 59. The resolution in the House: H. Res 109. The resolution was launched by Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez on February 7th. The Bill That Handles Most of It
HR 763: Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act of 2019 handles most of the issues in the Green New Deal. Encourage our House Reps to cosponsor it – and our senators to cosponsor its companion bill once it is in the Senate (probably in April). It is bipartisan – and therefore has a great chance.

Support For It
The Sunrise Movement are the main group nationally promoting the Green New Deal. They have many chapters, including in Seattle and Kitsap. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rallied about this with hundreds of young people from the organization in Nancy Pelosi’s office in Washington DC on Nov. 13th 2018. WaPo Another initiative the Sunrise Movement has is to ask our representatives to sign the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge – to say that they will not knowingly accept over $200 of fossil fuel money.

… Presidential Candidates
Sens. Harris, Booker and Warren totally support the Green New Deal – as do most Dem. presidential candidates. WaPo. The baby boomers in Congress in general do not agree. Sen. Feinstein (D-CA)’s patronizing conversation with youth about this.

… Locally
As of February 2019, Senators Murray and Cantwell have not cosponsored the Green New Deal – and of Washington State’s 10 Representatives in the House, only Adam Smith and Pramila Jayapal are cosponsors. More about local efforts to move this forward:
